Program Overview

The Asian Health Foundation CME/CE-certified web activity will provide health care professionals (HCPs) with an understanding of the need to screen for the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and chronic hepatitis B (CHB). The program will also provide HCPs with an understanding of the criteria to determine when to initiate and when to delay treatment in patients with CHB, as well as how to formulate individualized long-term treatment and monitoring strategies and manage treatment failure. Particular emphasis will be placed on management of HBV in special populations and disease states: women of childbearing age; hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV coinfection; reactivation of HBV in an immune-compromised state; and reversal of cirrhosis.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of primary care providers, including physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and registered nurses who care for patients at risk for HBV infection.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be better able to:

  • Identify patients who may delay treatment and establish an appropriate monitoring system
  • Formulate individualized treatment strategies for treatment-naive patients by identifying who and when to treat
  • Formulate individualized treatment and monitoring strategies for the duration of therapy
  • Manage treatment failure
  • Provide appropriate care and counseling for patients and their families
